Director’s Recognition Award

Extraordinary contributions to Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) by staff, students, school volunteers, or community members are recognized at each Public Meeting of the Board by the director of education, Wes Hahn. The following individual was nominated for their outstanding commitment and dedication to TLDSB.

Wilberforce Elementary School (WES) head secretary, Sandy MacDonald, consistently goes above and beyond her role performing her responsibilities with exceptional professionalism, organization, and care. As the first point of contact for students, families, and community members, she creates a welcoming, supportive environment where everyone feels heard and valued.

Beyond her administrative excellence, Sandy has a remarkable ability to identify emerging needs within the school community and take initiative to address them in meaningful and lasting ways, demonstrating both leadership and deep compassion in her work. Her efforts have had a direct and lasting impact on the well-being of students and families. Sandy has been instrumental in the expansion and maintenance of essential nutrition programs, including recruiting volunteers for the school’s daily Breakfast Program, and partnering with Breakfast Clubs of Canada to provide a nutritious Hot Lunch Program accessible to all students, helping ensure they are ready to learn each day. She has also built strong relationships with local organizations and fundraisers to support both WES and Cardiff Elementary School.

Sandy’s proactive, compassionate approach has significantly enhanced the quality of life for students and families, strengthening the entire school community.

Administrative updates

Director’s update

Director of education, Wes Hahn, noted that it’s a great time to be a leader in education, as there are opportunities to make change for the betterment of students and the future of education in TLDSB.

Wes spoke about the success of the first Director’s Student Voice Summit session that took place on April 22 at Lindsay Collegiate and Vocational Institute for the students in the City of Kawartha Lakes. The second session will be taking place on May 1 at the Muskoka Education Centre for students in Haliburton County and the District Municipality of Muskoka.

Wes also provided updates about credit accumulation, the intermediate professional development series for Grade 7, 8, and 9 educators, the link between positive student attendance and achievement, and the continual work with our community partners to support TLDSB students.

As part of the director’s update, the following two department updates were provided:

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Superintendent of learning, Kim Williams, who is responsible for Technology Services shared a connection with equitable outcomes for students through the lens of AI. Kim spoke to the approach TLDSB is taking to help prepare staff for the evolving AI technology, and the ways in which it is being used and eventually supported in the classroom. Kim added that four secondary teachers have been piloting using AI with their students, and their feedback has been valuable in guiding our next steps.

TLDSB plans to roll out AI for student and educator use in a responsible, safe, and ethical manner and will include conversations related to digital literacy, appropriate applications, and using AI as an effective tool to enhance not replace learning.

Day of Pink Conference

Superintendent of learning, Traci Hubbert, reported to trustees a good news story from the Day of Pink Conference that took place on April 10 at Archie Stouffer Elementary School. At the event, students heard from keynote speaker, Martin Boyce, who shared his experience during the 1969 Stonewall Riots. Following the presentation, students engaged in various workshops, featuring drama exercises lead by Trent University teacher, Rachael Nicholls, on practicing responding to and interrupting homophobic and transphobic comments. Traci shared a letter from a parent who expressed great gratitude to TLDSB for holding the event and supporting students.
